Michelangelo was one of the most famous and successful people of his time. Michelangelo attended a school set up by Lorenzo the Magnificent in the gardens of the Palazzo Medici. There he would have had access to the Medici collection of antiques, as well as a certain amount of tuition from the resident master, Bertoldo di Giovanni. Michelangelo’s crowning accomplishment, as an architect, was his work at Saint Peter’s Basilica, where he was made chief of architect. Michelangelo was responsible for the altar end of the building on the exterior and for the final form of its dome.
