Minorities in Chemistry
Minorities have had many contributions to science and chemistry. A few of these minorities are George Washington Carver, Marie Curie, Lloyd Hall, James Harris, Mario Molina, Baruj Benacerraf , Luis Federico Leloir, and César Milstein. An African-American born to slave parents, George Washington Carver innovated agricultural science. His work with agricultural products developed many uses for farm products. Carver began to experiment with peanuts. His research developed 325 products from peanuts. Carver developed several hundred industrial
and on the medical implications of the discoveries. Another Argentinean, César Milstein shared the Nobel Prize for Medicine and Physiology in 1980. He made contributions to immunology which led to improved medical advancements like cancer treatments and the detection of AIDS. With his colleagues, he developed the techniques for producing monoclonal antibodies which are antibodies with a specific affinity for certain sites in the body that might find diseased cells but leave healthy cells intact.
