Music Comparison

Hypothesis: “Two Bourrées” by J.S. Bach is more of a challenge to perform than “Etude 13” by L. Niehaus because the Two Bourrées was originally written for Violoncello, whereas, the Etude was composed specifically for the saxophone. The music of Bach and Niehaus exemplifies the style and characteristics of their period, namely, the Baroque and Twentieth-Century respectively. …Bourrées are made up of simple and repetitive rhythms and melodic lines. In contrast to this, Etude 13 was composed in the form of a “12 Bar Blues” with a standard blues chord progression of I, I, I, I, IV, IV, I, I, V, IV, I, I. With slight variations of this progression being used in succession throughout the piece including a bridge section from bar 37 to bar 40 and a coda section for the last 4 bars.
