April Smith Oedipus Rex Oedipus Rex, a play by Sophocles, is a detective murder-mystery. It is the story of Liaus, a murdered king, and his sworn avenger, Oedipus. Oedipus, husband of Jocasta (Liaus's widow) is the current king of Thebes. The city is suffering under a terrible plague. Unsure of how to save his people, Oedipus sends a messenger, Creon, to Delphi. There, Creon consults the oracle of Apollo on how to save the city
that attempted to run him off the road. In anger and defense, Oedipus killed those in the party. The party was that of Liaus. Oedipus learns that he, avenger of the dead king is actually the killer of his father, Liaus, and the husband of his mother, Jocasta. Following the curses and vows he has made, Oedipus strikes out his own eyes, and condemns himself to a life of endless wandering, blind through the world.
