On Representations of Race and
On Representations of Race and Racism George P. Nicholas, from the University of Chicago Department of Sociology and Anthropology, wrote this article after attending a conference in Alberta, Edmonton, Canada called “Anthropology in the 21st Century: Beyond the Ivory Tower”. Professor Nicholas was attending the conference, which was attended mostly by graduate students from various universities in the United States and Canada, in a guest speaking capacity. The article deals with Nicholas’ surprise at how
that Chatters chose to use that term. In the end, Nicholas concludes that there is a disparity between what many students of anthropology are taught about race, because of the large differences in the many textbooks that are used. He says that anthropology teachers have to cover the issues of race and racism with their students, not just their colleagues, because if they don’t they won’t be fulfilling their obligation to the public.
