On the Novit

In the papal letter the Novit (Crisis, pp.134-135)Innocent III stated how the papal society can justifiably interfere with the feudal disputes between the kings of France and England. Innocents III ideas on how the Pope is aloud to be involved in such arguments can be noted in this quote from Novit, “No man of sound mind is unaware that it pertains to our office to rebuke any Christian for any mortal sin and …

…us, and we can and should exercise any-one…” (Innocent lst p) This quote really sums up what the whole letter is about. He says plan and simply that he understands that the kings have their own rights, and he has no intention to take those rights away, yet when the issue is dealt with in a sinful way, it is the right and duty of the priest to take over the control of that issue.
