Plato
In Book II of The Republic of Plato, Socrates is having a conversation with his brothers about justice. In Book I Socrates was questioning what justice was and in this book he takes the question a step further. The new question is “What is the relationship between philosophy and politics and what is the relationship between free thought and a political doctrine?” In order to start answering this question, Socrates uses a method that differs
rather to harmonize reason with desire. To ensure free thought, you would use your desire to identify different parts; melodies, of the music and apply it to the desire. Music, made using a harp and or a lyre, was used most because of the different types of desires it adheres to. All desires differ in both strength and importance, but it’s our reason that allows us to pursue what is indeed good for us.
