Racism. No other word in the English language has such a history behind it. The most common meaning of the word is to hate another person or group simply because of race or religion. Racism is not limited to skin color or religion it could be for anything, such as being from a certain country of origin as shown in the novel, racism was also directed toward immigrants. In any form racism directed at anyone for any reason causes hate and violence, although it plays a major theme in the novel, racism still exists today.
