Slavery during the antebellum period was both kind and cruel, depending on your master. Catherine Green says that her master, Perry McGinnis, was a man who only believed in punishing his slaves when they needed it. …help the reader gain a better understanding of slavery and everyday life. It is difficult to imagine living in a place where you are treated like an animal. I find it very interesting that nowhere in narratives are feelings expressed, only events.
