The play centers around Blanche DuBois, who has been fired from her teaching job, and arrives unannounced at the small two-room apartment of her pregnant sister, Stella Kowalski. Stella, who lives with Stanley, her rough and domineering husband in a poor section of the French Quarter in New Orleans, welcomes her older sister. …to leave, she tells her sister of Stanley’s assault. Tragically, Stella sides with Stanley and decides to send Blanche to a mental institution. Blanche yields to the doctor and pathetically admits that she’s "always depended on the kindness of strangers". When Mitch learns of Stanley tricking Blanche, he strikes him and accuses him of masterminding his and Blanche's unhappiness.
