…piece of realism found in this book is the incident where the character Helene (a black lady), enters the white coach on a train and met the Crackered Conductor with a hefty smile. Then she enters the black coach where black spectators greet her with unchanging, indifferent faces. This is the saddest form of realism I’ve come across; already segregated by color, now detached from her own people because of an innocent (shamfull) expression.
