Susan B. Anthony Susan B. Anthony was an American reformer who led the struggle to gain the vote for women. She devoted 50 years to overcoming the nation’s resistance to woman’s suffrage, but died before the 19th Amendment was finally ratified. Susan was born on February 15, 1820, in the village of Adams, Massachusetts, the second of eight children. She also went to Europe in 1883, and met women’s rights activists there, and in 1888 helped form the International Council of Women, representing 48 countries. At the age of 80 she resigned as President of the National American Woman Suffrage Association, but she continued to be a regular speaker at its conventions until she died in Rochester, New York on March 13, 1906.
