Tariffs in the 1800’s The debate over whether the institution of slavery should come to an end was not the only divisive to conflict America. Tariffs and states right to nullify acts of congress, nearly brought the country to a secession and the possibility of a civil war. …it was for the good of the people, now giving all the states a fair chance. The tariffs on European goods in the 1800’s affected the United States in many ways, whether it was from the negative impacts of the Tariff of Abominations to the positive impacts of the American System. The discordant issue of tariffs contradicted America for a long period of time. Reluctantly the U.S. found reliable ways to manage these tensions.
