The Cask of Amontillado
The Cask of Amontillado Poe's “The Cask of Amontillado” is a story about revenge. The story begins with Montresor's vow of vengeance, foreshadowing future actions. "The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as best I could; but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge." Montresor had to be sure not to raise suspicion of what he was going to do to Fortunato. Montresor knew that Fortunato believed himself to be a connoisseur of
him, but Montresor had meant freemason. Montresor proceeds to chain Fortunato upright against the wall, a sort of replica of the crucifixion. Fortunato thinks Montresor is joking while Montresor bricks up the small room. Fortunato says “For the love of God,” and Montresor replies "Yes, for the love of God.” Montresor hurries to finish the newly built wall and reconstructs the old wall against it. The story then ends with the phrase “In pace requiescat!”
