The Catcher in the Rye
Compare and contrast the two openings of ‘The Catcher in the Rye’ and ‘Jane Eyre’ as openings to novels. ‘The Catcher in the Rye’ is set in the 60s and therefore uses a more contemporary language and tone. This can be seen when the author uses colloquialisms in a very satirical way, “kind of crap.” The author gives the reader a very good insight into the plot very early on in the book; from the
authority, “there is something truly forbidding in a child talking up her elders. Overall there are many similarities in the two novels, as well as differences. This would be expected as both novels have a considerable age gap between the periods when they were written. Both writers use similar methods throughout the openings to achieve the same effect, which tells us that writing hasn’t evolved massively between the dates when each book was written.
