The Graduate

The film “The Graduate” is seemingly divided into two sections, Benjamin’s relationship with Mrs. Robinson and his relationship with Elaine. These two relationships, although very different, are inter-related. An integral part of the film is that Benjamin is forced to choose between the two women, representing different morals and values. It seems to be obvious that Benjamin chooses Elaine, but a closer look at the ending has the viewer wondering if he is happy …

…that has descended upon them. The final image of the bus from behind as it drives away from the camera only serves to reinforce their division. Both Ben and Elaine are framed by a separate window of the bus, the emphasis placed firmly on the space between them. Thus, instead of the bus becoming a unifying symbol, it becomes the thing that separates them, leaving the viewer to question Benjamin’s happiness with his decision.
