The Just Cause, The Common Cause, and The Oppressor of Both.

Hope Leslie a novel written by Catherine Maria Sedgwick in the 1800’s is a tale for our time. As I was drawn into this tale I was struck by the very current views that are expressed by its various characters. Even though it was written in the 1800’s, and set in the 1600’s, Sedgwick reveals that mankind’s nature continues to be unchanged. To quote Solomon who’s divinely inspired writings are dated to 1000 BCE. “…

…the mischief which religion wreaks, is also beautifully portrayed. Magawisca’s saving of Everell, risking life and losing limb, has more to do with the principle of right and was not based on sentimentality. Do you suppose the current bloody Irish “situation” is anything like the Puritanical subjugation of the natives? Or perhaps like the conquest of the Aztecs by the Papist Spaniards? Then there are the Inquisitions. Rwanda, the Holocaust…. Need I go on?
