He was employed to explore the East Coast from Virginia to New Foundland. Consequently, fur trading began with Native Americans and the Dutch West Indian Company founded New Amsterdam on the Hudson River. The Dutch expanded as Far East as the Connecticut River and they captured settlements founded by the Swedish in the South.
