The Things They Carried vs. A
The Things They Carried vs. A Clockwork Orange The two stories A Clockwork Orange and The Things They Carried both demonstrate Free Will and Grace. In both stories groups of people do things in certain ways so that emotions can be distorted. When men went to war in Vietnam their morals and lives were different from the rest of society. In the story A Clockwork Orange, Anthony Burgess expresses how the adolescent society of England
kept them from going insane. They also had a lot of superstition; this helped them cope with their fears. These soldiers showed the reader that you could only find grace when your free will wasn’t compromised, when you were in the limits of society. This is also seen in the way Alex and his friends are not within the limits of society. They don’t speak in the same dialect and set themselves apart.
