The character of Brutus

In the play Caesar, Brutus’ role in the murder is still the “unkindest cut of all.” Brutus strives to be an honest and moral statesman but a statesman can seldom be honest and moral and still be right. Brutus, the statesman ends up both wrong and dead, however honorable. Brutus has the most important role in the conspiracy against Caesar. …its people keep him from being a good friend to Caesar. Brutus rationalizes his position in the conspiracy and believes assassinating Caesar for Rome would be a reasonable reason. “…I loved Rome more.”(act lll, sc. ii, l. 23-24) Brutus believes Cassius’ flattery and encouragement. Brutus becomes gullible and leaders can not be gullible. Both Caesar and Brutus fall prey to their own destiny, which is reserved for great men who are subject to flattery.
