        The North's was against slavery in the South and did not want to see it expanded to the Western states and territories because its leaders saw economic and political advantages in leaving those areas open to settlement by farmers and the working class. …Pickett's men had not yet even been in battle. General Pickett's did as he was commanded, the battle lasted two hours and nearly 15,000 Confederate soldiers lay dead. The Confederate Army retreated southward. Meade consulted his generals and 5 of the 8 counseled him not to pursue Lee. He did not and was severely criticized even though the Battle of Gettysburg was won. The South was defeated but it would take another year and 9 months before it surrendered.
