He started out with something he knew, which was the sentence about how Hat would wake up in the morning and what he said, but then he had to learn to let his mind continue the story and fill in the gaps that experience left out. By doing this, he learned about himself, because what he wrote had to come from within himself or a conglomeration of all his experiences.
