Ways in Which Characters are Corrupted by Money
Ways in Which Characters are Corrupted by Money Charles Dickens writes about ways money can corrupt people in the novel Great Expectations. Pip, Compeyson, and Miss Havisham’s relatives are obsessed with money to the point where it controls their lives. Sometimes, when people are exposed to money, it can change them for the worse. Before Pip met Estella and inherited his fortune, he respected Joe, Biddy, and the rest of his family. Once Pip
out of her death, comes their money. The only thing her relatives see is a rich, dying woman whom they can “feast upon” (79). There is no respect for Miss Havisham because the only things they see in her are money and jewels. All of these characters let money rule their lives and in doing this, they hurt the people who love them. Their actions toward wanting or having money cause strained relationships and wasted lives.
