Introduction Throughout history, women have had to fight hard for equality in many aspects of life. In the early history of the United States, women were not allowed to express themselves about certain societal issues. Phyllis Wheatley made a mark on the world in The Eighteenth Century by becoming the first black to be published in the United States. Each and every one of these women and their fight for equality and acceptance in society was beneficial to the literary world and will be forever appreciated for it.
