A SEPARATE PEACE Throughout the book A Separate Peace we see many of Knowles characters struggling with different aspects of their lives. One prevalent battle these characters are fighting is that between the savage, and civilized nature. Brinker and Leper are there to remove Gene from this fantasy world that Finny has got him involved him and all this does to Gene is make him afraid and brings out the worst in him.
