The Greek creation story began with only chaos. Then out of the void appeared Erebus, the unknowable place where death dwells, and Night. It was a place of death and silence; it was an endless abyss of darkness. Then somehow Love was born and from it came Light and Day. Once there was Light and Day, Gaea, the earth, appeared. Afterwards Erebus mated with Night, who bore Ether. She was the heavenly light. Then Night …

…fight. Gaea was angry that her children, the Titans, had been imprisoned. She gave birth to a child, Typhoeus. Zeus and Typhoeus battled and Zeus finally won. Typhoeus was buried under Mount Etna in Sicily. Much later, the Giants also challenged Zeus’ role. The Giants piled mountains on the top of Olympus. By this time Zeus and the other gods had grown strong and with the help of Heracles the Giants were subdued and killed.
