The Devil’s Advocate In Arthur Miller's historically-based play, The Crucible, a town is torn apart over the issue of witchcraft. Suspicion of “demonic influences” arise when Reverend Parris discovers his daughter, Betty, with a number of other girls dancing naked in the woods. Abigail Williams, one of the girls, claimed that they were simply dancing. However, many of the adults failed to believe her; they were convinced the girl’s behavior had to do
first line, Abigail appears to be a suspicious person, who has something to hide. Arthur Miller portrays her without any sympathy, simply as the villain. Since The Crucible was based on a true story, Abigail Williams is believable, but her ability to be so manipulative and cruel is unbelievable. Her cruelty is her most memorable and unfortunate trait, and perhaps what Miller wants his readers to remember most about the villain, Abigail Williams. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ **Bibliography**
