…several similar in instincts and logic, were revealed not only to the reader, but to the characters themselves where Trina only loved McTeague when he was dominating, McTeague only loved Trina when she was innocent, pretty and submissive, Marcus only loved Trina when she was rich, and Zerkow only loved Maria when she carried him away on his gold fantasies. Though somehow each were separate, all were driven by their greedy desires and compulsive needs.
