FOLK ART Jared O’Donnell English 5/20/01 Native American folk art is an ancient tradition, different for each group of natives. Each group has a unique form of art, which varies from pottery to blankets. Native American folk art tends to serve a purpose unlike that familiar art forms derived Western European countries. The Native Americans who originated in the Southwest have unmatched styles. The Anasazi are an ancient group of Native Americans whose descendants are
in the figurines. Another shared characteristic is the stories. “It’s named for Spider Woman. She lived up there a long time ago. One day she lassoed two Navajo ladies with her web and pulled them up there and taught them how to weave rugs.” (Kingsolver, 210). This is the same story that is told about how the women learned to weave decorative blankets. Many of the Southwestern native American folk arts fit into Animal Dreams.
