At the climax of the novel, Roger, one of the most ruthless of Jack’s tribe, murders Piggy and destroys the conch with a boulder, “the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist.” (Golding 181). When the conch is destroyed any civilization left on the island is gone.
