John Dalton was born on September 6, 1766, in Eaglesfeild, Cumberland County, England. John’s father was a weaver and a school teacher. John was taught by his father at a Quaker school in his home town. John began teaching at the Quaker school at the age of 12. In 1781 he moved to Kendal, where he had a school with his older brother and cousin. In 1787 Dalton began a series of meteorological observations. He continued these for 57 years.
