Nelly's character is known as one who refuses to accept, but is still afraid, of the supernatural. It seems as though she is grasping to all of the concrete proofs of nature in order to reassure herself and the reader that the deceased are sleeping peacefully, with out the capability to roam the earth as distraught lovers.
