Why was GM justified to close plants in Flint? General Motors under the authority of Roger Smith, the chairman, decided to close 11 plants in Flint, MI. These closing would lay off about 40,000 workers in the local area. Since 1983, car sales were steadily rising and GM had posted record profits of nearly $19 billion. So why close all of these plants? All of the workers were angry with this decision, Flint was the birth place of GM …

…Smith was justified in making this move because they informed the public that this was going the help consumers. This was still not what the city of Flint wanted no matter who was going to be helped because they were being stripped of their jobs. If this case was analyzed under utilitarianism, this move would not be justified.
