George Washington Carver George Washington Carver was born into slavery at the end of the Civil War, near Diamond Grove Missouri. His mother was owned by Moses Carver and his paternity is unknown. It is believed that his father was a slave on a neighboring farm who was killed in a log-hauling accident shortly after George was born. During World War I, he found a way to replace the textile dyes which has formerly been imported from Europe. He created dyes of 500 different shades, and invented a process for producing paints and stains from soybeans.
