…married across ethnic and social lines and they converted their husbands to Christianity. Even if double standards still existed and ruled relations between men and women, female conditions in the early Middle Ages surely improved. Compared to women in antiquity, early medieval woman had more opportunities to overcome social barriers. Although to our modern and equalitarian mentality the rights gained by those women could seem insignificant; they represented a great step forward in women emancipation.
