Art History Approach. Vincent Van Gogh painted at least twenty-four self-portraits between March 1886 and February 1888, seven being with straw hats. Van Gogh painted his self-portraits in Paris France, and he painted this specific self-portrait in the year 1887. This painting is currently in show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art at New York. …harmony. I personally like the color theme that Van Gogh has chosen for this painting. I also like the way Van Gogh uses the "dabbed" style of painting because it gives me the idea of nervousness. The eyes give me the sense of loneliness and the sense of crying that I can relate too. Van Gogh is not only successful in telling his life story, but also successful in winning my admiration of his painting.
