Intro The Great Depression was the worst economic slump ever in U.S. history, and one which spread to virtually all of the industrialized world. The depression began in late 1929 and lasted for about a decade. Many factors played a role in bringing about the depression; however, the main cause for the Great Depression was the combination of the greatly unequal distribution of wealth throughout the 1920's, and the agricultural distress of the farmers. The
supply and demand. Prices fell, and farmers were often unable to sell their products for a profit due to a 40 percent decrease in agricultural goods' value on the market. As a result, farmers began to default on their loans and the banks foreclosed. To make matters worse the central part of the nation was hit with a terrible drought. Farmers were devastated. The drought turned that portion of America into what was called "The Dustbowl."
