Anselm Kiefer's "Glaube, hoffnung, liebe" measures 280.0 x 380.0 x 75.0cm and is a mixed media piece which consists of synthetic polymer paint, shellac on photodocument paper on canvas (linen) with lead. It was started in 1984 and completed in 1986. The background is impasto; the emulsion paint has been built up to create a texture and the brush strokes are clearly visible. The background again has a grungy, dirty, monochromatic tone which adds to the effect of dissuading the audience of war and destructive activities. The way the background has been done is also interesting, with obvious lines and directions in the background. Up the top we see a horizon and under that we see very dominant lines that direct our eyes across the painting.
