Beowulf is very much a romance it fits just about all the requirements and standards that a romance is expected to have. The things that really make a romance is the long rigorous journey, the hero with victorious battles, and then the ruler or king role when he returns to his homeland; all these things are very common in Beowulf, this it is of course a romance. …reasons that it may seem to some not a romance because it is written modern for its time and as well is missing some a the characteristics, but the main ones are very there. You have the journey to the battles, the heroic battles and numerous ones if that, and then you have the main prize when he journeys back to his home. This poem clearly has the characteristics of a romance by anyone's standards.
