They succeeded in reminding the spectator they were in a theatre, I think this is done mainly through the technical V'effekte as the other two are not obvious to the spectator. The technical V'effekte can't help but detach you from emotion as there is a constant interruption and reminder that it is unreal. So in that sense I would say Brecht managed to achieve his aims in certain areas.
