…he really doesn't. Holden's depression, immaturity, and suicidal thoughts lead Holden to the mental ward where he tells this story. The characteristics that Holden portrays lead him to from expelled from school to problems with his parents to problems in his social life. Had Holden not been suicidal and immature he might have had a happier life. Therefore Holden is a cumpolsive lying, immature and manic depressive teen that can't, and probably won't grow up.
