…lt;Tab/>IIIIII. Ending the War The Hartford convention was a gathering that members that opposed war attended. The peace agreement that caught the Federalists by surprise was the Treaty of Ghent. It had been signed in Belgium on December 24, 1814, before the Battle of New Orleans took place. At the end of the war, both sides returned the stolen land. The diplomats found no solutions to the problems of impressment or trade embargoes.
