The main dream in of mice and men is land, it is at once wanted by all, and achieved by none, as crooks puts it, "Just like heaven ever' body wants a little piece of lan'. I read plenty of books out here. Nobody ever gets to heaven and nobody ever gets no land." During the book it is frustratingly close, George, Lennie and Candy seem to come so close to getting their land that …

…is his all consuming dream to have rabbits and "live off the fatta the land!" he is going to do it right now, right this very moment, and then George shoots him, and so the life of this great hulking man is snuffed out, and all that he has to say is that he is going to fulfil his dream, he has never done anything meaningful, all he thinks about at his death is rabbits.
