An addiction is a disease process characterized by the continued use of a specific psychoactive substance despite physical, psychological or social harm. An addict often makes false promises, not because they are doing it on purpose, but because they almost always break them because the addiction is so strong. Addiction is nothing but a miscarried and often tragic attempt on the part of an individual who does not feel good to feel better. This is why it is so hard for addicts to realize that they need to stop, and why they keep going through an endless cycle of trying to quit, and then starting back up again.
