The original need for such a system passed with the arrival of the telegraph, never mind satellite communication and the Internet. In a country responsible for founding modern democracy, citizens have an unequal voice in who becomes president. Whatever happens in two weeks, it's time for Americans to scrap the Electoral College -- an 18th-century solution to 18th-century problems.
