…to understand where the path of mankind would have led, had all the effort devoted to destruction, been devoted to improving mankind. The First World War was a study in contrasts. On one hand it set new horizons in technology such as aircraft, tanks, and weaponry and on the other front, in the trenches, it reduced mankind to a level of barbaric warfare that did not exist on this scale even in the middle ages.
