FTAA
Social Change and Development Sociology 336 11-13-03 Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) <Tab/>Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) is an extension of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The FTAA follows a similar model that was developed by NAFTA. FTAA has nine groups that correspond to NAFTA's chapters. The FTAA's nine groups cover the following topics: agriculture, competition policy, dispute settlement, government procurement, intellectual property rights,
and failing to make laws protecting their citizens. They enact trade agreements allowing rights to multinational corporations, which devour democracy in exchange for profit maximization. Governments would be restricted from passing laws that hinder the business of foreign investors. This right is protected by the "investor to state" lawsuits established by NAFTA's Chapter 11. These lawsuits provide corporations with the power to sue governments for any action that might decrease profits. <Tab/>
