Fight Club
The purpose of this thesis is to look at a piece of contemporary western culture - the film - in relation to its mythical properties. A myth is the narrative that traditionally involves the supernatural or imaginary characters within it. It is an allegory of sorts, a narrative where the content conjures up a "figurative or symbolical meaning" (Parragon, 1999:18). It is the myth that also encompasses the embodiment of popular ideas on the natural or
ories and many other classic tales. No longer is it solely the responsibility of the tribe elder to pass on their cultural heritage in the form of myths. The new elders, television and filmmakers, show people them - they are the new storytellers. So it is impossible to escape myth within film, it is there, this does not however mean that all mythical rules and patterns must or are obeyed within the new filmic myth.
