Harlem Renaissance

Beginning as a series of literary discussions in lower and upper Manhattan, which are sections of New York City, this African American movement was first know as "The New Negro Movement" and later identified as the Harlem Renaissance. Writers, actors, and dancer such as: Langston Hughes, Josephine Baker, Claude McKay, Countee Cullen and others traveled to Europe and attained popularity there that surpassed what they had achieved in the United States. For thousands of blacks around the world, The Harlem Renaissance was proof that whites did not hold a monopoly on culture and literature.
