August 28, 1963, Martin Luther King delivered a profound message on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. He had a dream, a dream that one day blacks would not be looked upon as Negros or coloreds, but as Americans. King was on a mission, a mission for social, political, and economic equality. He hoped that one day "black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sign in the words of the old Negro spiritual: "Free at last, free at last, thank God almighty, I'm free at last."
